| The Four faces in the mountains are watching over the sacred burial ground, and they are called the Sacred Sentinels. The warrior on the scaffold at the front of the painting has just passed away and has been buried with all of his essential items to accompany him in his next life. The four tobacco ties on one leg of the scaffold represent the four sacred directions. His medicine bundle and shield are on another leg. A buffalo skull acts as his guardian. A horsetail quirt has been placed on the fourth leg. They usually kill his war pony and lay him at the base of the scaffold to accompany him on his journey. This pony is decorated with his medicine and coup counts and is trying to awaken his master. The bars on the nose mean that the warrior has counted coup on his enemy; the handprint means that he has killed the enemy in hand combat. The circle around the eye represents the Sacred Circle. The eagle feathers represent medicine from the Great Spirit. |
